  67. Installing the Driver
  68. ---------------------
  69. 1. Run the INSTALL program for your ATI video adapter (found on your original
  70.    ATI diskette #1) under DOS or in a Full Screen DOS session (under OS/2)
  71.    and check the "Power-Up Configuration" to ensure that you have selected
  72.    an appropriate monitor type.  OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be
  73.    configured for the IBM default 60Hz vertical refresh rate.
  74.  
  75. 2. Check The Minimized Window Viewer to see if you have any WIN-OS/2 or
  76.    DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the install may not work
  77.    if a WIN-OS/2 session is running.
  78.  
  79. 3. Insert ATI PM driver installation diskette into drive A.  For users
  80.    who download the driver files from our BBS or CompuServe, you can create
  81.    your own driver installation diskette.  Make sure that you set the
  82.    diskette volume label to 'MACH32OS2' during formatting.  The installation
  83.    program will fail without the correct diskette volume label.  Then simply
  84.    "unzip" the download file onto the new diskette.  Alternately, you can
  85.    "unzip" the files into a temporary directory on your hard disk and install
  86.    from there (skip to step 4B in this case).  See "Extra Notes" for further
  87.    details.
  88.  
  89. 4A. To install the drivers from diskette, open an OS/2 window or OS/2 full-
  90.     screen command prompt, and type
  91.  
  92.         A:
  93.         INSTALL C:
  94.  
  95.     (where A is the drive with the ATI OS/2 drivers and C contains the drive
  96.     where \OS2\INSTALL IS)
  97.  
  98.     Goto step 5.
  99.  
  100. 4B. To install the drivers from your hard disk, open an OS/2 window or OS/2
  101.     full-screen command prompt, and type
  102.  
  103.         CD [XDIR]
  104.         INSTALL C:
  105.  
  106.     (where XDIR is the directory that contains the ATI OS/2 drivers and C:
  107.     contains \OS2\INSTALL))
  108.  
  109.  
  110. 5. When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display
  111.    and click OK to bring up a list of choices.  You should see an option for
  112.    ATI mach8/mach32.  If you don't see this option, the file ATIM32.DSC has
  113.    not been copied to C:\OS2\INSTALL and you will have to copy it manually.
  114.  
  115. 6. Select 'ATI Technologies Mach8/Mach32' from the list and click OK.
  116.  
  117. 7. When the source directory panel appear, enter the driver files drive
  118.    letter and/or pathname and click 'Install'. After the files are copied,
  119.    exit the OS/2 window or full screen session. Shut down and restart your
  120.    system.
  121.  
  122. 8. The PM driver will first come up in 640x480, 256 colors mode.  Use the
  123.    following steps to change the screen resolutions or number of colors:
  124.  
  125.    a. Open 'OS/2 System' icon.
  126.    b. Open 'System Setup' icon.
  127.    c. Open 'System' icon.
  128.    b. Select the 'Screen' tab.
  129.    e. Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.
  130.    f. Point to the title-bar icon and double click to close the window.
  131.    g. Shut down and restart your system.
  132.

  134. Bugs Fixed in release 931027
  135. ================================
  136.  
  137. . 8514/Ultra.
  138. -------------
  139.  
  140. a. On Micro Channel machines, the ROM address for the 8514/ultra is fixed
  141.    at C680, this physical address is not accessible directly through OS/2.
  142.    However, the 800x600x256 mode is no longer available.
  143.  
  144. b. ISA machine users : if you can change the location of the rom-bios,
  145.    please set it to one of C800, C900, CA00, CB00,.....,etc.  If you don't
  146.    set the bios at a 4K page boundary, you will be unable to use the
  147.    800x600x256 mode.
  148.  
  149. . Switching from WINOS2 full screen directly to full screen dos, os/2.
  150. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  151.  
  152. Gives a very dim screen on 64K color modes.  This is now fixed.
  153.  
  154. . PM : Open System setup, menus, too slow
  155. ------------------------------------------

  157. This has been speeded up by a factor of two.

  161. Extra Notes
  162. -------------
  163. . Remember that you must close all WIN-OS/2 sessions or the install will fail.
  164.  
  165. . If you obtained these files from a BBS, you should create a directory on
  166.   your hard disk for the following files :
  167.  
  168.         ATIM32          (os/2 drivers)
  169.         WINMACH         (windows drivers and fonts)
  170.         ATIM32.DSP      (install script)
  171.         ATIM32.DSC      (install script for C:\OS2\INSTALL)
  172.         DSPRES.DL_      (display driver resource file)
  173.         INSTALL.CMD     (display driver installation program)
  174.         README.OS2      (this file)
  175.  
  176.   If you wish to create an installation diskette please format a diskette,
  177.   label it as MACH32OS2, and copy the files over. The diskette should
  178.   contain the files above, and MUST have the volume label MACH32OS2.
  179.  
  180. . RUNNING DOS EGA/VGA APPLICATIONS UNDER OS/2 ON GRAPHICS ULTRA +/PRO
  181.  
  182. DOS graphics applications that run in any of the EGA or VGA planar modes
  183. listed below can not run in a DOS window session under OS/2.  There is no
  184. separate VGA memory on the display adapter to virtualize the VGA graphics
  185. mode drawing in an accelerator drawing mode. Therefore, please use these
  186. programs in a DOS full screen session.
  187.  
  188.         mode 0dh        320x200 16 colors
  189.         mode 0eh        640x200 16 colors
  190.         mode 0fh        640x350  2 colors
  191.         mode 10h        640x350 16 colors
  192.         mode 11h        640x480  2 colors
  193.         mode 12h        640x480 16 colors
  194.  
  195. These modes cannot be supported as vga memory is generally not available
  196. when hardware accelerator features are enabled.  We can only enable these
  197. features at a big penalty in performance, so they will not be enabled.
  198.  
  199. . RUNNING THE DISPLAY ADAPTER'S TEST PROGRAM
  200.  
  201. The display adapter diagnostics program should only be run in a DOS full
  202. screen session. Also, do not attempt to switch to PM desktop or other tasks
  203. in the middle of the diagnostic, otherwise the desktop might be corrupted.
  204.  
  205. . CORRECTING PROBLEMS AFTER INSTALLATION.
  206.  
  207. If, after installation, you are unable to start OS/2 2.1, please consult
  208. Page 128 of the OS/2 2.1 supplied Installation Guide :
  209.  
  210.         Resetting Display Adapter to VGA (SETVGA)
  211.  
  212. Ignore any errors that you may get at the end of the procedure.  The
  213. SETVGA.CMD script assumes that an SVGA driver is installed and will complain
  214. if it fails to delete it.
  215.  
  216. . CHANGING SCREEN RESOLUTIONS IN PM SYSTEM SETUP.
  217.  
  218. After clicking on the resolution you wish, close the system window by double
  219. clicking on its top left icon.  This will write your settings to disk.  Your
  220. changes will not take effect until the system window is closed and you reboot
  221. your machine.
  222.  
  223. . Hanging with DRAM cards
  224.  
  225. We have had a problem with hanging DRAM cards.  This is now fixed, but dram
  226. card users may experience slower performance than vram card owners.
  227.  
  228.  
  229.  
  230. Current known problems and limitations
  231. --------------------------------------
  232.  
  233. 1. DIGITAL VIDEO PLAYER. When playing Ultimotion video clips in 64K color
  234. mode, the picture comes up as mostly blue and playing Indeo video clips will
  235. hang the system. This is due to problems with the OS/2 ultility of not able
  236. to handle true color mode properly. Please switch to 256 color mode to play
  237. these video and wait for IBM's fix.
  238.  
  239. 2. WP for OS/2, 123 for OS/2. These two programs are confirmed to have
  240. problems running in 64K color mode. Please switch to 256 color mode to use
  241. them and wait for the fix from their respective manufacturer.
  242.  
  243. 3. 640x480 IN 70HZ REFRESH RATE. OS/2 INSTALL and the generic VGA driver
  244. have a problem when 640x480 in 70Hz refresh rate.  Change the refresh rate
  245. to IBM default or 60Hz to install OS/2, as noted in step 1 of "Installing
  246. the Driver".  Note that this is a limitation of OS/2, and ONLY applies to
  247. the 640x480 resolution.  Other resolutions may be configured at any vertical
  248. refresh rate.
  249.  
  250. 4. WIN-OS/2 CLOCK IN DIGITAL DISPLAY. When the clock is running in digital
  251. mode without a title bar, switching to any full screen task and back will
  252. corrupt the clock display. This bug is still under investigation, a
  253. temporary workaround is to use the clock in analog mode or in digital mode
  254. with a title bar.  Remember that refreshing the clock window will redraw
  255. properly.
  256.  
  257. 5. WIN-OS/2 CLOCK AND OS/2 DIGITAL VIDEO PLAYER. When playing a video clips
  258. with a seamless WIN-OS/2 CLOCK running at the same time, some artifacts may
  259. show on screen. This bug is still under investigation, close the seamless
  260. WIN-OS/2 clock before using the digital video player for the time being.
  261.  
  262. 6. OS/2 LOCKS ON SHUTDOWN. Periodically OS/2 may lock during shutdown before
  263. displaying the "Shutdown is completed" message.  This is a documented problem
  264. with Presentation Manager.  The following appears in the OS/2 README file:
  265.  
  266.  o   During a system shutdown, there might be
  267.        times when the "Shutdown is completed"
  268.        message is not displayed.  If this happens,
  269.        wait until all disk activity is complete,
  270.        then power off the system.
  271.  
  272. 7. OS/2 SELECTIVE INSTALL REPORTS THE 8514/A DRIVER INSTALLED.  The Selective
  273. Install feature of OS/2 actually searches the hardware in the system, and
  274. detects the 8514/A compatibility of the ATI accelerators.  Selective Install
  275. will report the current driver as being "8514/A", even after you've installed
  276. the ATI OS/2 drivers.
  277.  
  278.  
  279. 8. WRONG DRAWINGS ON OVERLAPPED WINDOWS.
  280. Running multiple seamless windows sessions could cause drawing on
  281. overlapping windows to be wrong.
  282.  
  283. Problem is currently under investigation.
  284.  
  285. Refreshing the problem window will clear the problem.
  286.  
  287. 9. OUT OF SYNC MONITORS, VGA, AND MACH32. (640x480 MUST BE AT 60Hz)
  288. Using Video Graphics Array (VGA) driver with MACH32 cards.  If you install
  289. the VGA driver for the MACH32 card, you MUST use the install program to set
  290. the Monitor to CUSTOM and the refresh rate for 640x480 to 60Hz.
  291.  
  292. If not, the monitor will be out of sync.  After the first time you boot
  293. OS/2 in VGA mode, you can reset the refresh rate to any value your
  294. monitor supports, but every time you run DSPINSTL, you must reset the
  295. refresh rate to 60Hz.
  296.
